Summer is in full swing and that means one thing: time to hit the beach! But before you do, make sure you know how to protect your skin from the sun. Here are some tips to help keep you safe this summer:

Wear sunscreen

This is the most important thing you can do to protect your skin from the sun. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days. And don’t forget to reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming.

Be sure to apply sunscreen generously, and don't forget often-missed spots like your scalp, ears, neck, lips, and the backs of your hands. You'll also need to reapply more frequently when you're sweating or swimming.

If you can't find a sunscreen you like or if you have sensitive skin, try a mineral sunscreen. It contains ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of your skin to block UV rays.

You can also protect your skin by covering it up with clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses. Look for clothes made with tightly woven fabric, and don't forget to apply sunscreen to exposed areas.

Cover up.

Lightweight, loose-fitting fabrics are best.

If you are outside during peak hours, be sure to wear clothes that cover your skin. Lightweight, loose-fitting fabrics are best. Wear long sleeves, pants, and a hat to protect as much of your skin as possible. Don't forget to apply sunscreen!

When it's hot outside, the temptation to cool off in the water can be strong. But it's important to remember that water temperatures can rise quickly, even in shallow areas. Be careful when swimming or wading in rivers, lakes, and ponds – always check the temperature before getting in!

If you must be in the water during peak hours, try to stay in areas where there is some shade.

Stay in the shade.

Seek out shady spots when you’re outside, and use an umbrella on the beach or at the pool. You can also wear sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat.

Wear sunglasses that block out both UVA and UVB rays.

Check the UV index before you go outside. The higher the number, the greater the risk of harmful rays reaching your skin. If the number is 6 or above, take extra precautions.

Limit your time in the sun.

The peak hours for UV exposure are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you can, stay indoors during these times or make sure to take breaks in the shade. If you can't avoid being outdoors during these hours, make sure to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, a hat, and protective clothing.

You can also take steps to protect yourself from UV rays indoors. Make sure to close the curtains or blinds on windows that get direct sunlight. If you're using a tanning bed, be aware that they emit UV rays that can damage your skin. Make sure to wear sunscreen and eye protection when using a tanning bed.

UV rays can also penetrate clouds, so don't let cloudy weather fool you into thinking you're safe from their harmful effects. Take the same precautions on cloudy days as you would on sunny days.

Protect your lips.

To protect your lips from the sun, it is important to apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. This will help to shield your lips from harmful ultraviolet rays and prevent them from becoming sunburned. Additionally, be sure to reapply your lip balm or lipstick regularly throughout the day, especially if you are spending time outdoors or in the sun.

When it comes to preventing sunburns, it is also important to limit your exposure to the sun. If possible, stay indoors or in the shade during peak hours of sunlight. If you must be outdoors during these hours, be sure to wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants, and a hat. Additionally, apply sunscreen all over your body before heading outside.

Finally, if you do get a sunburn, be sure to treat it immediately. Applying a cool compress to the affected area can help to soothe the pain and reduce inflammation. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, to help with discomfort. If your sunburn is severe, or if you develop any other symptoms, such as blistering or fever, be sure to see a doctor right away.

Know the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Watch for symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate. If you experience any of these, get out of the sun and into a cool, shady spot. Drink lots of fluids, too. And never, ever leave kids or pets alone in a parked car — not even for a minute.

If you have to be outside on a hot day, wear loose, lightweight clothing and a hat. Don't forget to put sunscreen on your ears, back of your neck, and tops of your feet.

When you're done with your outdoor activities for the day, take a cool shower or bath. Or apply cool compresses to your skin. Doing this will help you lower your body temperature.

Dehydration is a big risk on hot days. So, it's important to drink fluids even if you don't feel thirsty. Water is the best choice. But if you're going to be outside for a while, sports drinks can help replace electrolytes like sodium and potassium that you lose through sweat.

If you have a chronic medical condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, check with your doctor before spending extended time in the heat. People who take certain medications — such as diuretics, sedatives, beta-blockers, and some antipsychotics — may be more prone to heat-related problems.

Check your skin regularly for changes.

Perform a self-exam every month, looking for new moles or changes in existing ones. If you notice anything unusual, make an appointment to see a dermatologist. Be sure to tell the doctor if you have a family history of melanoma.

If your doctor suspects you have melanoma, he or she will likely order a biopsy, during which a small piece of tissue is removed and examined under a microscope. If the diagnosis is melanoma, your doctor will stage cancer, which helps determine the best treatment plan.

By following these tips, you can enjoy all that summer has to offer while keeping your skin safe from the harmful effects of the sun.
